Top 4 questions our customers ask us when they are thinking about a new furnace.
We receive dozens of requests for information on Furnace and Central Air Conditioning replacement every month. Although our website is full of information on this and many other topics, I thought that I would help some of you by providing answers the most popular questions that are presented to us here at Tradesman Heating and Cooling regarding High Efficient Furnaces.
What does a new high efficient furnace cost?
The problem in our northern climate in cities such as Winnipeg is that mid efficient furnaces are no longer an option due to provincial and national regulations with a minimum standard of 92+%. Most manufacturers have now set their minimum at 94% for a base line builders model high efficiency furnace starting somewhere over $3,200.
For a few hundred dollars more, single stage units with DC motors will reach up to 95% efficiency by the electricity savings from the blower motor. Two stage high efficient Gas Furnaces are set to deliver more comfort with reduced temperature swings and quieter operation. Expect to pay around $500.00 to $1,000 more than the single stage model.
Modulating gas furnaces provide the best in comfort control with up to 98% efficiency. Be prepared to pay around $2,000 more than the base line single stage furnace.
Return on investment can be argued with different results based on usage, heat loss, maintenance and future costs of Manitoba’s natural gas. Although these new models all provide efficiencies well above older mid (80%) and natural draft(70%) furnaces the expected lifespan of any high efficient furnace will be less than most mid efficient and much less than older natural draft furnaces that were built the same way they used to build older cars.
Why should I not just repair my old Furnace?
When the repair ends up being a substantial amount it raises an age-old question that has been asked about everything from cars to computers. Is it more cost effective to repair what you have or invest in an upgrade or replacement? Here is what I believe to be a sensible way to decide.
Think safety first
If the problem presents itself as a safety hazard, replacement is a no-brainer. For example, if your furnace has a cracked heat exchanger poisonous carbon monoxide gas could work its way into the household air supply, something you don’t want to risk. Other problems, like faulty controls, motors or gas valves can be repaired, which means you’ll need to do a cost-benefit analysis.
- Will you be selling your home and hope to recover the increased value?
- Will you get to enjoy the benefits of added comfort?
- Will you enjoy being worry free from future breakdowns?
- Will you use the energy savings to have a new furnace pay for itself?
What kind of furnace warranty do I get?
Most manufacturers offer a standard 5 year parts warranty. The installing contractor will normally include one year labor coverage. Some of the manufacturers have recently been offering a 10 year parts warranty to promote sales. Tradesman is the largest York dealer here in Winnipeg and includes:
- All single Stage York Furnaces: 10 yr parts + 2 years labor
- 2 Stage York Furnaces: 10 yr parts + 10 years labor
- Modulating York Furnaces 10 yr parts + 10 years labor
New gas furnaces prices are higher not because they are better built but because they have more components that need checking on over time. Prevention – (Good Warranty) is the best investment. To see our exclusive guarantees and warranties CLICK HERE.
