Does your work mean so much to you that you want to do this forever (you wish!), or is it simply a way to earn a paycheck and pay bills? Do you develop personal energy and strength when you work or do you need the weekend to recover? Is Friday your worst day because you have to wait till Monday to continue working? (not likely but keep reading)
As we age the idea of actually enjoying our working hours becomes more and more important to us and we realize the importance of feeling rewarded or accomplished. Of course most of us have to work to earn a living, but there are many ways to find pleasure or at least value the experience of learning every day in our jobs. This takes self-insight and reflection.
How does work affect your health?
The biggest waste of one’s life is when your Job is simply a ways and means to retirement. If the weekend is the only part of your life that you enjoy, then you must choose a better plan for yourself. Are you unhealthy now because of your job? A person’s job can be the most important key to a happy life since it can and will not only affect your physical health but your moods and personal relationships.
Take a minute and analyze your feelings right now as you think about your job. Are you excited to think about a project that you are working on? Are you excited or anxious to get back to it? Does it bring you joy to talk about your work when you are not there? There should be at least some reward other than monetary that you can take away for your self-esteem.
What is the right job for you?
If you are doing the right work, the reward will be in the work itself. You will be happier and appreciate your loved ones. You will have a greater sense of life being lived for the moment vs always planning for a time that may never come. Most importantly, one can stop competing to get the boss’s attention for a promotion that will surely come sooner when a positive attitude is passed on to customers and co-workers alike.
If thinking about your job only upsets you, then you should realize that you are the best person to change this. Despite all of the excuses that you have had, you must start making changes now. Even small changes can add up to big improvements. If your situation requires a complete career change then so be it!
You deserve to have happiness in your life and in your job so you can pass it on to the rest of us.
