What does that really mean?
There are no less than 100 Heating and Air Conditioning contractors in Winnipeg. Most of them claim to provide “24 hour emergency service” or “24/7/365” or some other catch phrase that indicates that you the customer will be able to contact them for service.
The larger national HVAC companies with branches in Winnipeg will use call centers that may even be located in another country. This situation is not always that effective but a requirement due to their corporate structure and lower cost. A telephone receptionist takes the call and forwards the customer’s request for service and contact information by way of phone, text or email to a locally appointed person that will either handle the call directly, or dispatch the information to a technician. Only the more progressive service providers will have a remotely searchable database to access customer history and provide answers and solutions on the spot.
Smaller two or three man shops typically will not consistently answer all calls since they are either overworked or simply do not care to follow through with a “24 hour” promise.
There are only a handful of local Heating and Cooling Companies here in Winnipeg that are in a position to successfully provide a premium afterhours Emergency service offering. The few that do in fact take calls in the middle of the night or on a long weekend will sometimes use a company representative to answer or return calls that does not have a technical background and he or she may fail to ask some simple key diagnostic type questions. Something as simple as thermostat batteries or a service switch left off can prove to be a costly oversight. This situation is not the best, but even worse a less than qualified employee may be sent out since the real technicians have already put in a full day and are not on call.
Another problem that all Furnace and Air Conditioning contractors face is having the required parts to complete a midnight no heat call. Although there are universal parts that can be used in some cases with older equipment, most newer high efficient furnaces require specific factory replacement parts and there are few Furnace Repair companies in Winnipeg that have invested in inventory for any more than the one Brand that they supply and service.
The situation most often goes like this. “Sure Mrs. Jones, we repair all makes and Models of furnaces” and later…. “Unfortunately we do not stock that part and the supplier charges us an afterhours fee of $100.00 to open up. Are you ok with the extra fee?”
Our goal here at Tradesman is to actually offer the same timely service and the same technical support around the clock and stand behind “Our Service Department Never Closes” statement. Our inventory of service parts becomes broader and more complete every season since we refuse to pass on any $100.00 surprises to our customers. We pride ourselves in providing a +90% completion rate on Furnace and A/C repairs of any Model or Brand.
