All newer high efficient gas furnaces and some late model mid efficient units will have a control circuit board that will offer flashing led status and error codes
The manufacturer will have a chart in the operation or installation manual of the furnace and another usually positioned on the inside of one of the front door panels.
Having this information is a great start in determining the problem and getting the heat back on. There are only a few situations however that an unqualified homeowner can safely remedy a failure.Furnace
Circuit boards with only one light (usually Red) will simply repeat one or two series of flashes over and over again. Boards with two or three lights (Red, Green, or Yellow) will have one or two status lights that indicate normal operation or fan speed, but will have one lite dedicated to repeating flashes to provide the error code.
Resetting the power may clear the code temporarily and allow the furnace to try again. A different fault code may be observed during these tries until a final lockout that returns the original fault code.
Here are 3 tips that may get the heat back on for you. Furnace
- A high limit code can sometimes be the result of overheating due to a dirty air filter. Change the filter or remove it until you can replace it and reset the power to the furnace. If the heat comes back on, it is usually a good idea to have the limit replaced anyway since they are a safety component that is not designed to be reset over and over again as it loses its sensitivity.
- A pressure switch code can be the result of many different issues or combination of issues. The only thing as a winnipeg homeowner that you can check is the vent pipes as they protrude through the wall to the outside. Snow or ice build-up can be cleared away and possibly allow for a re-set and get your heat going again. Once this situation happens , it is probably a good idea to have the system checked since water can make its way back into the pressure switches or in other places where it can cause more damage. Some furnaces and situations will clear themselves but others may not.
- The only other failure that could become obvious is a gas valve code. Check to see if the gas has not been turned off and of course the utility bill has been paid.
Winnipeg homeowners may not have a lot of time on a -40f day to figure things out, so it is always best to have a dependable heating contractor number at hand. Ask your friends or neighbors who they have used and trust or give us a try at Tradesman Heating and Air conditioning.
