It’s been almost 2 years since the last time I lost my iPhone. It was funny at the time when I dropped it overboard leaving it to settle at the bottom of God’s Lake under 40 ft of water, but not much fun after that with having to spend many hours replicating the previous data.
Losing my iPhone this past weekend however, proved to be much different.
A shopping trip to our local Superstore had Robin and I picking up a few things for some weekend cooking. It was a busy day with calls coming in so I spent most of my time on my phone. My last stop as we were leaving the store was to grab a Grey Cup Raffle ticket from one of the local fundraising kids. As I was filling out the ticket stub, Robin took the shopping cart to the truck to unload our groceries and then parked it with the other carts getting her loonie back. As we left the parking lot the truck’s Bluetooth voice announced “disconnected” making me realize that my phone was now out of range and not with me but somewhere back in the shopping centre!
Within a minute we were back in our parking spot and as Robin checked the empty shopping cart, I went to ask the ticket sellers if they had seen my lost phone. We then moved into the store tracking back over the 5 or 6 places that I had visited just 15 minutes before. Knowing that it had to still be in the store, I used Robin’s phone to call Tracy and had her Ping my phone using the “Find my phone” feature. We had also informed the Customer Service desk and nothing had been turned in as of yet.
Watching the GPS signal on Robin’s phone allowed me to track and zoom in on the signal coming from my lost phone. Problem was the signal kept moving around leading me to think the GPS signal in the building was simply too inconsistent. Eventually I ended up following the signal into the bakery section knowing that I had actually been there an hour before to grab a fresh loaf of bread.
Then the phone rang! “Did you lose your phone?” was the Woman’s first question. Almost instantly I could see her on my phone only 15 ft away and I proceeded towards her to thank her for returning the phone. An older gentleman next to her laughingly said “No………, thank YOU for turning off that damn noise. It’s been following me around the store since I got here!!”
It was just as funny to find out afterwards that Robin could hear the ping clearly when she went back to the fruit and vegetable department, and again close to the spice section. It was Fun!!
